Mr. Macintosh

The mysterious little man who lives inside your Mac.

What Is It?

Mr. Macintosh is a macOS menu bar app that brings back a forgotten piece of Mac history. A tiny mysterious character randomly pops up on your screen, peeks from behind the menu bar, dashes across your desktop, and disappears before you're sure you even saw him. You can adjust how often he appears, anywhere from every 2 minutes to every 90 minutes.

The Story

Back in 1982, Steve Jobs burst into the office one evening with an idea: "Mr. Macintosh! We've got to have Mr. Macintosh!" He described a mysterious little man who lives inside each Macintosh, popping up every once in a while when you least expect it, winking at you, and disappearing again.

The idea was that one out of every thousand times you pulled down a menu, Mr. Macintosh would appear leaning against the wall of the menu, wave at you, then vanish. You'd try to get him to come back, but you wouldn't be able to.

It never shipped in the original Mac due to ROM space constraints. This app finally brings that idea to life, 40+ years later.
